Coming Soon: Four Restaurants Opening to Look Out For in August

This year, the summer is far from a quiet time for the metro Phoenix restaurant scene. The openings keep on coming with four new spots, including a Biltmore outpost of a popular Scottsdale restaurant and bar, a new doughnut shop in Arcadia, another deep-dish pizza option, and a mysteriously named "900-degree" restaurant on Shea Boulevard.

Twisted Grove Parlor + Bar

Twisted Grove Parlor + Bar

Christopher Collins, the restaurateur behind Grassroots Kitchen & Tap, Sweet Provisions, Wally's American Gastropub, and Twisted Grove Parlor + Bar Scottsdale is opening a new outpost near the Biltmore in August.

"Ever since I first opened Twisted Grove in Scottsdale two years ago, I've been looking to bring it to the neighborhood where I grew up," Collins said. "This space has everything you could hope for; a great location, two dining patios overlooking 32nd St. and a bright, airy dining room and bar. Plus, guests will now be able to drop their car off at the valet and slip in the back door."

On the northwest corner of Camelback Road and 32nd Street, in a space that formerly housed Stella restaurant, and Zen 32 before that, the addition of a back door entrance leading to a dedicated parking lot and a valet, as well as a totally renovated dining room outfitted with tufted booths and community tables, are just a few of the changes that have been made. Another nice touch is the take-one-leave-one cookbook library. The menu will be the same as their Scottsdale location, with an emphasis on shareable small plates, as well as a weekend brunch.

Even more deep dish, Chicago-style pizza is coming to the Valley with the opening of the third location of Buddyz A Chicago Pizzeria in Ahwatukee. The soft opening of the space at 1334 East Chandler Boulevard is scheduled for early August. The Ahwatukee location will feature a 15-seat community table, eight beers and eight wines on draft, and a much larger dining room than the first two locations in Queen Creek and Gilbert.

Masterpiece Donuts & Coffee+

Masterpiece Donuts & Coffee+

In August, a new high-end doughnut and coffee shop will open its doors at 3950 East Indian School Road inside a new mixed-use shopping center. The shop will feature cooked-to-order cake doughnuts topped with customized icings and toppings, as well as Illy coffee and espresso drinks. Icing options include vanilla, chocolate, maple, strawberry, and glaze, while toppings range from rainbow sprinkles, chopped peanuts, and Oreo crumbles to sea salt and cinnamon sugar. The custom doughnuts can be finished with a "drizzle" of vanilla, chocolate, marshmallow, caramel, cinnamon, raspberry, peanut butter, or espresso. The 1,600-square-foot space will feature a local artists gallery, lots of tables and chairs, oversize windows, and, and, we assume, some strong Wi-Fi. The shop will be open from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

The Covenant Restaurant

The Covenant

The sign for the strangely named business opening soon at 4740 East Shea Boulevard at Tatum Boulevard appeared recently, and upon further investigation, it turns out that the space is destined to be a restaurant with a so-called 900-degree kitchen concept. According to the website, this involves using organic, locally sourced ingredients in dishes that will be complimented by an extensive wine list and handcrafted cocktail program in a "casual and elegant atmosphere". They are hiring now and aiming to open next month. We still aren't exactly sure what a 900-degree kitchen is, but their social media food pics are impressive enough to have piqued our curiosity.
